Monsters

So maybe the theme of "Monsters" seems like a stretch for "Fizz, Boom, Read" but I made it work. I taught the kids about Cryptozoology, which is the study of animals whose existence has not been scientifically proven. Think Sasquatch or the Loch Ness Monster. You may be thinking, "This girl is a little nuts." Probably, but it is still fun to teach the kids a scientific word. And, most importantly, it teaches them more about the "C" sound, so it works.

The storytime went well...almost a little too well. When I read "Go Away, Big Green Monster" by Ed Emberley, one of the older toddlers might have been a little too into the fact that I was talking about a monster. But, I told her it was a nice monster but we were going to tell him to go away, and he would listen to us. Crowd control. It's all about crowd control. Things they don't teach you in library school.

Rhymes/Fingerplays/Songs:

Five Little Monsters:
This little monster has a bluish-green nose.
This little monster has purple toes.
This little monster plays all night.
This little monster is such a fright.
And this little monster goes "Tee-hee-hee"
"I'm not scary, It's just me!"

If I were a monster…
If I were a happy monster, I'd go ha! Ha! Ha! (Laugh.)
If I were a sad monster, I'd go boo, hoo, hoo. (Rub eyes.)
If I were a mad monster, I'd go stomp, stomp, stomp! (Stomp feet.)
If I were a scared monster, I'd go AHH! AHH! AHH! (Scream.)
But I'm just me, you see, so I'll just read, read, read! (Put hands together like book.)

“Monsters Galore”
Monsters galore, can you roar? (Roar.)
Monsters galore, can you soar? (Flying motions.)
Monsters galore, please shut the door. (Clap.)
Monsters galore, fall on the floor! (Sit/fall down.)

If You're a Monster and You Know It
If you're a monster and you know it shake your horns
If you're a monster and you know it shake your horns
If you're a monster and you know it, then your growl with surely show it (RAWR!)
If you're a monster and you know it shake your horns

Other verses:
…show your claws
…gnash your teeth
…stomp your feet
…give a roar

Books:

1. "Love Monster" by Rachel Bright

It's adorably sweet, and not too scary. It is a wonderful book to share with toddlers and preschoolers alike.

2. "Go Away, Big Green Monster" by Ed Emberley

Ed Emberley does many other wonderful monster books. It was very difficult to decide which to do. It was a close call and I almost did an Ed Emberley storytime instead of having to choose.

On the Farm

We talked about colors, played I-Spy, and sang "Baa, Baa, Black Sheep." It was all about objects and animals you see on the farm! And, to incorporate a little science into the mix, our special letter of the day was Z for "Zoology"!

Rhymes/Fingerplays/Songs:

Orange as a Carrot
ORANGE as a carrot,
YELLOW as a pear,
PURPLE as a plum,
BROWN as a bear,
GREEN as the grass,
BLUE as the sky,
BLACK as a cat
RED as cherry pie

*With this rhyme, I printed out pictures of each object. I had the kids help tell me what each object was and then tell me its color.

I-Spy Game
I Spy with my little eye
Something..._____.

Baa Baa Black Sheep
Baa, baa, black sheep,
Have you any wool?
Yes, sir, yes, sir,
Three bags full;
One for the master,
And one for the dame,
And one for the little boy
Who lives down the lane.

Books:

This is such a fun book! There is a hole cut-out where the rooster's head is. With each animal, it shows a bit of their body (including what color they are) and then the sound they make. Then the kids get to guess what animal we are talking about on the farm!

2. "Blue Goose" by Nancy Tafuri
